Custom Election Code Community Consultation, Nov. 22 & 23, 2023 -click here for the full story.

The Custom Election Code is back on the SIFN agenda and the new Chief and Council are committed to getting it ratified early in 2024 in time for the next election in the later summer of the the year. A meeting was scheduled for Nov. 20 but was postponed until the 22nd out of respect for the family following a death in the community.

The meeting took place at the CYN and began on Wednesday morning at 10 am with coffee and Innu donuts. Chief Etienne Rich facilitated the meeting while Director of Operations, Greg Pastitshi delivered a condensed version of the Election Code by way of a Power Point presentation. By lunchtime the presentation was complete and members in attendance were treated to a delicious catered hot lunch. In the afternoon a discussion period ensued and the attention turned to the audience as they expressed their comments and points of view. Two motions were passed that day and at 4 pm door prizes were drawn for four lucky winners.

Chief Rich decided that a second day to continue the discussion would be beneficial so people were invited back to start again on Thursday at 10 am. This day, eight motions were made and only one of those was defeated. Minutes were taken and will appear on this site as soon as we complete our review with the minute takers to ensure accuracy. The meeting concluded at 5 pm with another draw for door prizes.

The Chief and Council will meet to determine the next steps needed that will lead SIFN to a final vote on the Election Code upon which it will be accompanied by a Band Council Resolution (BCR) and will become law.

Thank you to everyone who attended. It was a most valuable and fruitful process. Soon SIFN will have their own Election Code created by the people for the people. It will become the foundation of your democratic elections.
