Your Voices Have Been Heard!
We began the Community Consultations back in December 2022 and have had seven meetings since. Finally on Tuesday, February 6, we made history when the community voted to ratify the Election Code with all the amendments. The vote was almost unanimously passed with146 YES and 5 NO votes. This is a big step towards self governance for SIFN and ensuring that elections will be clean and fair.
The Final Custom Election Code is now complete. The Chief and Council signed a Band Council Resolution on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2024. The final version is now on its way to the Minister of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) to be included in the First Nations Elections Act. We express a hearty thank you to ISC for their financial support that brought this process to fruition.
