New Chief and Council Swearing In Ceremony at SIFN

August 21, 2024 was the date of an historic election for Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation. It was the first election based on the new Custom Election Code that was ratified by the people on February 6 earlier this year. The result was a peaceful, fair and clean election free of bribes for votes and drugs and alcohol. Everyone is to be congratulated for turning the tides and leading SIFN towards a healthier community.

New to the election was the Swearing In Ceremony held on Wednesday, August 28 at the Ussiniun Youth Centre. All the new Councillors and Chief took an Oath of Office administered by Father Joe and Elder, Penute Antuan. The Electoral Staff was also recognized as was the Elections Oversight Committee who volunteered their time to help support the laws of the Election Code.

We were honoured with the attendance of local dignitaries: Perry Trimper, MHA; Yvonne Jones, Member of the House of Commons; Heather MacLean, Detachment Commander for the RCMP; Lieutenant Colonel A.M. Sajan, Base Commander for the CAF; Christopher Rich, Deputy Chief of Innu Nation; John Gaudi, CBC Radio and Jennifer Taylor, Indigenous Services Canada.

The Event MC was Stella Rich who also helped organize the ceremony along with Angela Rich. The SIFN Director of Operations, Greg Pastitshi was the main presenter. When the formalities ended, the feast began. Everyone enjoyed a delicious roast beef dinner and the drumming of Elder, Joseph Mark.
